Whole Foods Opens

The twice delayed Whole Foods Daily Shop on Grand Street has finally opened.
First set to open in December before pushed into 2026, the opening this week was delayed a day by the blizzard.
The shop is filled with a combination of local brands, white label 365 brand, and a selection of national upscale products like Bob’s Red Mill.
The 365 brand organic milk clocked in at $4.99, $2 less than all organic brands at Food Bazaar. Organic milk prices typically are fairly stable across the local grocery markets, but 2 to 3 times as much as conventional milk.

The 365 brand products come with a big discount over name brand products.
There was a big cheese selection in the dairy aisle. Nearby C-town has typically had the best selection of cheese — until now. And unlike the C-Town which puts processed cheese and gourmet cheese in different sections throughout the store, Whole Foods has all the cheese on one sppot.

Local cofee producers are well represented no the shelves.

Maple syrup and organic rolled oats from the 365 brand run much cheaper than other real maple syrup or Bob’s Red Mill organic rolled oats at nearby shops like Bravo, across the street. (The store brand is also cheaper than Bob’s at Whole Foods)

The large selection of prepared foods including soups will directly compete with C-Town, Food Town and Brooklyn Harvest, though these convenience foods might be driven by a customer’s proximity to either Grand Ave versus the Graham Ave L train.

And of course there was a big stack of Talea beer.

One area where the Whole Foods doesn’t win on price is in the fresh fruits and vegetables. Food Bazar had raspberries at $2.49 a pint yesterday, but at Whole Foods, they were over $6.

One thing to consider though is the new store has over invested in self-checkout lanes and under invested in cashiers. That could eventually create a bottleneck at busy times.
Beyond that issue though, the combination of high quality food and cost effective prices should hopefully put other nearby groceries on notice, especially Beyond Market on Montrose where prices are astronomical, and the new FoodTown on Grand Street where higher prices will soon also be competing with Lidl.
